Occasional care

The Department for Education delivers an occasional care programme from pre schools and child centres in rural and metropolitan areas throughout South Australia. The focus is to provide care for children in communities where there is limited child care options.

The aim is to:

  • Provide families with access to sessional occasional care, targeting children not accessing other early childhood education and care programs
  • Enable parents to participate in a range of activities (including non work and casual work commitments)
  • Promote young children’s development and learning by increasing access to a high quality early childhood education and care programme.

The programme is offered at Coomandook Area School in “The Coop” for children aged two years or older. It operates for a three hour session each Thursday morning from 9am to 12 noon. Parents/carers of children wishing to access the service must provide evidence of their child’s immunisation status and ongoing evidence is to be provided in accordance with the protecting children from vaccine preventable disease procedure.

Cost

$5 per session or $1.50 per session for health care card holders.

Pre school

2019 saw the amalgamation of the Coomandook & Districts Kindergarten with the school. The early learning space, which we now call “The Coop”, has been transformed to cater for children in pre school (kindergarten), foundation (reception) and year 1.

The focus at “The Coop” is on developing individual children according to what they need, who they are as a learner and how we can help them grow.

Our pedagogy involves strong anchoring in the following fields:

  • Play based learning
  • Inquiry based learning
  • Outdoor learning – the environment as the “third educator”.

Children who turn 4 before 1 May are eligible to start pre school at the beginning of the year before they start school.

Children are able to access a government funded pre school for 1 year before they start school. If you are uncertain about the best time for your child to attend pre school, or feel your child may benefit from starting pre school later, contact the school about your options.

We look forward to further developing “The Coop” to provide an inviting environment for all students.

Enrolment details can be obtained by contacting the school.
