Community Library
The Coomandook school community library is located in the grounds of Coomandook Area School as it is a combined school and public library. It opened in 1983 as a School Community Library (SCL) (also known as ‘Joint-use’ libraries) were established in 1975 and are unique to South Australia. They have proven a remarkable success in providing a public library service in rural areas of South Australia.
This model has been successful due to the effective cooperation between the Department for Education, Local Government and the Libraries Board.
Coomandook School Community library members are users of the SA pubic library ‘one card’ network that connects the systems of more than 130 public libraries across South Australia allowing customers to borrow and return items anywhere across the state. The materials of all participating libraries are available on a single shared online library catalogue that is accessible 24/7 offering a vast range of books, DVDs, audio books and CDs. Items can be reserved online and delivered to any library for pick-up, and returned to any library. Membership is free and open to all members of the public. One card members also have free access to a range of online magazines and services including access to services -please see the links at the bottom of the page.
The library is open to students at recess and lunchtime. Students can use this time to sit quietly and read or take part in a range of activities, crafts and games while they engage with friends and peers in a supported, caring space.
The Coomandook Library does have a meeting room available for bookings (subject to availability). Please contact the library or school for further information.
